New Home?

Life can often take us in strange directions. I never really thought I would end up here. What the heck is this lunatic talking about? Let me back up. I’ve been a casual blogger since 2003, probably about the time when blogs started to get popular. I made a blog on Blogger back then. I’ve seen people complain about Blogger not having categories, or built-in comments for the longest time. When I signed up for an account back then, there weren’t even titles for posts.

At some point in time, I became interested in web designing. When Blogger got a little more advanced, I started to make my own layouts for my own blog. But the reality is, I’m not a very artistic person at all. I’ve been planning on a new layout, but sometime after the beta, I just picked a predefined template. For the time being, maybe it’s best to concentrate on other things.

I’m not really sure why I am considering switching. It was only a recent thought. Blogger was simple. The main reason why I wanted a blog is because I wanted somewhere where I could write stuff. My main goal isn’t to point out amazing truths, search for the meaning of life, or be an activist for some human rights thing. I just want somewhere to write stuff. I could of used a journal, but my handwriting is so sloppy. I look at my notes I take in classes, and I can’t even read half of it. It also takes a lot of paper, and eventually I’ll have to buy a new journal when there are no more pages left.

And that’s why I started blogging. Later on, I’ll see what else can this thing do and type up a short biography on myself.

I had thoughts that I’d be posting on Blogger for a very long time. That time may come to end, maybe not. It will depend on how WordPress works out. Ultimately though, I think it would be nice to host a blog on my own domain, once I get out of college and find a steady job. For now, being hosted elsewhere will have to do.

I don’t really have any qualms with Blogger. It’s very simple. I just wanted a change of pace. I looked at other blog hosting services. I never really liked LiveJournal for some reason. And virtually every site on MySpace that I’ve seen looks very messy. In real life, I maybe a bit of a slob, but when it comes to websites, I like both the site and the code behind it to be neat and tidy. Another reason why I am switching is because I don’t really want to log on to the site every time I want to make a post. It’s the same thing with e-mail for me. That’s why I eventually found Thunderbird, and use G-Mail because Yahoo and my college’s e-mail services do not allow POP access.

I don’t think WordPress.com has the answer I’m looking for actually. But it’s free, and it’s worth a shot. And there should be a way, I’m just too lazy to find it. The biggest gripe I have right now is the customization is very limited since you can’t edit the CSS unless if you upgrade the account. Luckily, my web design class should give me all the opportunities at coding I need for the time being. At least the header graphic can be changed.

So, that concludes my first official post here. I’m actually hoping that this will work out, and I’ll start posting here instead of my old blog. It’s nice to go back through those years and reread what I posted. On the other hand, it is also very messy. The astute observer can notice the changes slowly reflected as Blogger upgrades their technology, even if all the posts are in the updated designs. There are also lots of other nitpicky reasons why I don’t like Blogger, but those aren’t worth mentioning in this post. Maybe some other day, maybe never. For now, time to publish and see what WordPress.com has to offer.
